*Call to Worship ~ Psalm 63:1-4; 134:1-2
O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. So I have looked upon you in the sanctuary, beholding your power and glory. Because your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise you. So I will bless you as long as I live; in your name I will lift up my hands…Come, bless the Lord, all you servants of the Lord…Lift up your hands to the holy place and bless the Lord!
*Prayer of Invocation
Our gracious Heavenly Father. We praise You, for You are good and Your steadfast love endures forever. We join with the Psalmist and proclaim this day that, “Your steadfast love is better than life.” Apart from You we have nothing and we are nothing. Apart from You our lives are without hope and purpose. And because of our sin we deserve eternal death. But You have saved us by Your steadfast love and mercy in Christ. You have rescued us from the pit of death and given us eternal life that we might have hope in this world. Help us to take heart this day and to know that You alone are our rock of refuge, that You alone are the portion of our soul and our strength forevermore. Help us to lift our hearts to You in soul-satisfying praise. Help us to exalt Your name, O LORD, and to taste and see that You are good to us in Christ. Help us to praise and glorify You. For it is in Jesus name we pray, Amen.
*God’s Greetings ~ 1 Corinthians 1:2-3
To the church of God…to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Reading of God’s Law ~ Deuteronomy 5:6-21 (p. 150 in ESV Bible)
Prayer of Confession (FP, p. 101)
Almighty and most merciful Father, we have erred and strayed from Your ways like lost sheep, we have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts, we have offended against Your holy laws, we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done, and so we are helpless without You. O Lord, have mercy upon us, miserable offenders, spare us, as we confess our faults, restore us, as we are penitent, according to Your promises declared to us in Christ Jesus our Lord, and grant, O most merciful Father, for His sake, that we may hereafter live a godly, righteous, and devout life, to the glory of Your holy name. Amen.
(moment of silence to confess particular sins, followed by a prayer by the minister).
*Declaration of Pardon ~ 1 John 4:9-10
In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
Congregational Prayer followed by The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.
