*Call to Worship ~ Psalm 96:1-3, 10-13
Oh sing to the LORD a new song; sing to the LORD, all the earth! Sing to the LORD, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvellous works among all the peoples!…Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns! Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved;he will judge the peoples with equity.”…Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult, and everything in it! Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joybefore the LORD, for he comes, for he comes to judge the earth. He will judge the world in righteousness, and the peoples in his faithfulness.
*Prayer of Invocation
Our gracious heavenly Father, help us to sing a new song to you. For you have done marvellous things in the person and work of your Son, our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Help us to proclaim among the nations that “The Lord Jesus Christ reigns!” For he is the one who did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore, you have highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Help us to do that now by your Spirit, as a foretaste of glory. And to him be all praise, together with you, O Father, and the Holy Spirit. One Lord, the same in every age. Amen.
*God’s Greetings ~ 1 Peter 1:1-2
To those who are elect exiles…according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood: May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
The Athanasian Creed, Lines 29-44 (TPH, p. 853; FP, p. 150)
But it is necessary for eternal salvation that one also believe in the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ faithfully. Now this is the true faith: that we believe and confess that our Lord Jesus Christ, God’s Son, is both God and man, equally.
He is God from the essence of the Father, begotten before time; and he is man from the essence of his mother, born in time; completely God, completely man, with a rational soul and human flesh; equal to the Father as regards divinity, less than the Father as regards humanity.
Although he is God and man, yet Christ is not two, but one. He is one, however, not by his divinity being turned into flesh, but by God’s taking humanity to himself. He is one, certainly not by the blending of his essence, but by the unity of his person. For just as one man is both rational soul and flesh, so too the one Christ is both God and man.
He suffered for our salvation; he descended to hell; he arose from the dead on the third day; he ascended to heaven; he is seated at the Father’s right hand; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
At his coming all people will arise bodily and give an accounting of their own deeds. Those who have done good will enter eternal life, and those who have done evil will enter eternal fire.
This is the catholic faith: that one cannot be saved without believing it firmly and faithfully.
